Cupertino Library Foundation is introducing a new talk series on Memory Care as part of our Senior Programs. These events will range from lectures by domain experts, panel discussions with experts and citizens, to hands-on workshops. For 2021 we have schedules 4 events. All events are free to the public; in 2021 all events will be virtual. One would need to register for each event to obtain instructions on how to join the virtual event. Description: A panel of 2 local residents whose families have been through dealing with memory diseases and an Executive director of a Non-profit organization that provides day care services folks with mild to moderate dementia will share their insights on caring for a memory care patient. The panel will discuss their journeys and offer suggestions on how to cope with the loss of a central personality, grief, the burden on family friends. Additionally, they will cover how seek help across a broad spectrum of new needs.

July 25, 2021 2:00PM: “10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s” by Grant Giske, The Alzheimer’s Association
Talk Abstract: Alzheimer’s and other dementias cause changes in memory, thinking and behavior that interfere with daily life. Join us to learn about 10 common warning signs and what to watch for in yourself and others. The one-hour program covers typical age-related changes, common warning signs of Alzheimer’s, how to approach someone about memory concerns, early detection, the benefits of a diagnosis and diagnostic process, and Association resources.
The Alzheimer’s Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Our mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.
Grant Giske owned and managed his own software consulting company for many years. He has had several friends with Alzheimer’s in recent years and was involved in different degrees with their care. He has been giving this and other Alzheimer’s presentations for almost a year.

1. “Developing the Roadmap on Dementia” by Dana Graefe, Dir. Resident Services, The Forum at Rancho San Antonio, Cupertino
2. “Healthy Brain Aging and Recent Advances in the Treatment of Alzheimer’s disease” by Dr. Armen Moughamian, Medical Director, Ray Dolby Brain Health Center, San Francisco
Memory Disease and Memory Care are issues that some of our families and friends face. When are we having an innocent Senior Moment versus witnessing the tell-tale signs of a memory disease? If so, which disease are we facing? What do we do? What does this mean for our family? In this kickoff event we bring two engaging local experts on Memory Care.
Dana Graefe, a Resident Services Director at the Forum at Rancho San Antonio in Cupertino, will give us an overview of the various diseases that we may face; care options; costs; and local resources. This overview will help us understand a bit more of the map of this foreign land of memory disease and care.
Dr. Armen Moughamian a Neurologist and Medical Director of the Roy Dolby Brain Health Center in San Francisco, will then take us through understanding one of the most prevalent diseases, Alzheimer’s Disease. He will help us understand what we might do to stay healthy as well as discuss some recent medical advances in treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease.
